King of Thai Noodles, San Francisco

San Francisco. It rained and rained. Such a poor timing that we came and it rained so much. Well, California needed water, I guess, so the rain was good for the state. Finally, the much needed free water came pouring down.

We passed by this Thai noodles restaurant around Union Square and we thought it was just perfect to have a bowl of hot soup while it was wet and cold outside.

My eyes and my heart set on beef ball noodles above while DH's pick was noodle soup with sliced fish cakes. My soup was a little bit sweet, but it did not bother me too much. The portions are American portion, i.e. ginormous. We were not able to clean up, it was no surprise. We, however, were satisfied with the flavor we had.

Tangs Market

Tangs Market in Orchard Rd, has reopened. It's a smallish food court with cramped seating arrangement.  We haven't tried all of them but we like some like their noodles soup and siew mai. I found their $4 popiah to be uninteresting, a tad too sweet for my liking. Their lo mai kai is quite good!

Thai Lunch

There are many new restaurants in Wheelock Place and somehow we decided on eating in Bangkok Jam. Maybe it's the result of not having Thai food in a while? Our firsthand experience with Bangkok Jam in Great World City was not a good one and I refuse to go back there. It turned out, many people complained about the same poor service by this branch as well.  My own experience this time around in this place was a better one and the food was fine too. DH and I shared a plate of Fish Cake and I had Salted Fish Fried Rice (below). DH had Rice with Chicken Basil.

Absolute Thai In JPO

We went to Johor Premium Outlets (yes, in Malaysia) to see what we can see and to buy what we wanted to buy. We heard of it, read about it and were simply curious to know how it was. We went to those in the USA and the prices are quite nicely discounted.

This post is about the lunch we had when we were there. There was a food court and some restaurants, but we picked this Absolute Thai. It has a branch in Somerset, Singapore as well. Again, we ordered our usual dishes. They offered a mixed appetizer, a plate of fish cake, spring rolls, etc. We also had a bowl of Green Curry Chicken.

We also had Pad Thai, which looked really wet and not too good-looking, but it was alright, and a vegetable dish.

A plate of Fried Rice with Chicken Wing was ordered for Mr. Dx, who is not a fan of spicy food and a enormous fan of chicken. Everyone was full, everyone was pleased and we then continued shopping.

Flying Chillies....

It's getting so close to the end of January, 1/12 of the year is nearly gone. Gone. Just like that.

The school is on the break, which is designed to coincide with Chinese New Year, therefore they all have a full fat week off. We all know that the classes only started three weeks ago, but being an international school set out in a country with Chinese as majority in population, that works fine as well.

Miss K and I tried to shop, we needed to buy a few things and we were glad we found what we were looking for. Unfortunately, when we got home, we found that the lady gave us the wrong size of dress for my dear shopping buddy. What a bummer! That's one more thing to sort out!

We headed for late lunch, as usual, after shopping. That's around 3PM. Just great, most of the restaurants were not packed. Our choices were between Italian and Thai at 313 Somerset. After viewing their menu - as if they were accurate prediction to the greatness of the food - we went for Thai.

It is the place where DH wanted to try but has not got around to, called Flying Chillies. We, being really boring at the time, went for our typical orders. Fish cakes for appetizer, Chicken Pad Thai, Green Curry with Chicken and Sweet Tapioca with coconut milk for dessert. Yes, it was the same old one. Completely super boring.

I personally did not find both their curry and the tapioca appealing. The rests are ordinary. As always, I have to say that I have to try before I know whether a restaurant is worth a return visit. For this one, it is a maybe.

Pad Thai Number 8

If we had the choice, we would like to have a home-cooked meal by now. It was only our second evening in Orlando, time for dinner again. Thai food was our next best thing to eat, although that only meant that we had eight Thai meals within 23 days of our trip. I am glad that DH has stopped his obsession on Chinese foods here, that are catered more towards the liking of people here. We love Pad Thai anyway!!! So bring it on!

Orlando has many Thai restaurants and many of them claim to have won some sorts of awards. We picked this restaurant because we had no choice after we were misled a number of times in one evening. We were lead by our new GPS friend to places that are not there or closed and finally were surrendered at the first one that really existed and opened for business, Ayothaya Thai Cuisine on West Sandlake.

This restaurant has a nice Thai traditional setting and the waitress was courteous. She let us know ahead of time that it might take a little longer to prepare the food because they were having a big party. We appreciated the honesty and didn't mind waiting even though we were starving. The food didn't take too long to arrive as it turned out.

Our typical order was fish cake, Thai Green Curry, Pad Thai and some sort of mixed vegetables. Why bother looking looking at the menu if we almost always order the same ones??? We do anyway, to see what they offer and DH normally takes his own sweet time to look at the dishes one by one and in the end decided on having whatever the rests of us want. wink

The food was great, their Pad Thai was excellent. The prices are a little higher, but they are still reasonable compared to their serving size. In most cases, we all agree that Singapore prices are higher than those here. If the economy is not so bad right now, I would almost say that it's a near bargain. But since stock markets all over the world are plummeting crazily, I should stop at that! Ha.

(I miss my kitchen, my pots and pans. And baking the bread......)
