A New Month, A Cancellation

September,.... we're anticipating Gustav heading to New Orleans, oil prices rising, Republican National Convention and we see continued political unrest in Thailand, that resulted in the cancellation in the scheduled Harvard Model Congress Asia in Bangkok.

Our grade 12 family member was one of the few that was selected to attend this conference, the one where international high school students learn about government while playing the roles of officials in the United States government. A couple of days that would provide an opportunity for her to experience something that she wouldn't experience otherwise. It's a big disappointment for her and I am sure for everyone that's involved. The loss is not merely monetary but also opportunity to widen one's knowledge.

Yesterday, we read about three major Thai airports - Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai - being closed for most of the weekend and the state's rail network paralyzed by strikes coordinated by the People's Alliance for Democracy. Many visitors were stranded and unable to leave the country.

We accept that safety comes first, it's really reasonable for such event to be canceled as the country's situation has been unstable over the past few days, one never knows which direction this unrest is going to go to. It's unfortunate, however, that it is not re-scheduled.

Just like Gustav case. As inconvenience as it is for people to flee the city, it still has to be done, because the safety of one's life is the most important thing of all. People have many reasons for not wanting to leave their home, but they still do it anyway. As for P, this window may have been closed, but another might be open soon. She just needs to keep on looking out.

Talking about window, P took a very nice picture of a window when she was in South Africa. I enjoy this shot.
